چکیده
Abstract Background The efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) containing the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (PPF) and pyrethroid insecticides (PPF-ITNs) is being assessed in clinical trials to determine whether they provide greater protection from malaria than standard pyrethroid-treated ITNs areas where mosquitoes are resistant pyrethroids. Understanding entomological mode action this new ITN class will aide interpretation results these trials. Methods Anopheles gambiae sensu lato ( s.l .) a susceptible laboratory strain were exposed PPF-treated netting 24 h, 6 immediately prior to, or h post blood feeding, impact on fecundity, fertility longevity recorded. Pyrethroid-resistant populations permethrin PPF cone bioassays daily mortality Mosquitoes also collected inside houses pre- post-distribution PPF-ITNs trial conduced Burkina Faso; female An. s.l. then for fecundity fertility. Results exposure reduced median adult lifespan insecticide-susceptible by 4 5 days all times (p < 0.05) other pre-blood meal resulted almost complete lifelong sterilization. pyrethroid-resistant was at least after compared untreated nets, but unaffected only ITNs. A total 386 blood-fed gravid . females five villages between 1 12 months before distribution PPF-ITNs. Of mosquitoes, 75% laid eggs remaining 25% appeared have normal ovaries upon dissection. In contrast, 8.6% 631 PPF-ITN successfully oviposited; 276 (43.7%) did not oviposit had apparently dissection, 301 (47.7%) abnormal Egg numbers significantly lower (average 138/female vs 85 distribution, p 0.05). Conclusion Exposure mixture pyrethroids shortens reduces reproductive output. Sterilization vectors lasted one year under operational conditions. These findings suggest longer effective PPF-pyrethroid reported previously.

A Small-Scale Field Trial of Pyriproxyfen-Impregnated Bed Nets against Pyrethroid-Resistant Anopheles gambiae s.s. in Western Kenya
Pyrethroid resistance is becoming a major problem for vector control programs, because at present, there are few suitable chemical substitutes for pyrethroids, as when used on bed nets the insecticide must have low mammalian toxicity as well as high activity to mosquitoes. Pyriproxyfen (PPF) is one of the most active chemicals among the juvenile hormone mimic (JHM) group. Sterilizing mosquitoes...
متن کاملCombining Organophosphate Treated Wall Linings and Long-lasting Insecticidal Nets for Improved Control of Pyrethroid Resistant Anopheles gambiae
BACKGROUND New approaches to delivering insecticides need to be developed to improve malaria vector control. Insecticidal durable wall lining (DL) and net wall hangings (NWH) are novel alternatives to indoor residual spraying which can be produced in a long-lasting format. Non-pyrethroid versions could be used in combination with long-lasting insecticidal nets for improved control and managemen...

The efficacy of nets treated with lambda-cyhalothrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, on malaria infection and disease was assessed for the first time at the community level in Anopheles gambiae pyrethroid resistance areas. The study was carried out in northern Côte d'Ivoire, which is an area of kdr resistance. Four pairs of villages were selected and matched according to demographic, sociological, a...

متن کاملOlyset Duo® (a Pyriproxyfen and Permethrin Mixture Net): An Experimental Hut Trial against Pyrethroid Resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus in Southern Benin
BACKGROUND Alternative compounds which can complement pyrethroids on long-lasting insecticidal nets (LN) in the control of pyrethroid resistant malaria vectors are urgently needed. Pyriproxyfen (PPF), an insect growth regulator, reduces the fecundity and fertility of adult female mosquitoes. LNs containing a mixture of pyriproxyfen and pyrethroid could provide personal protection through the py...
